Senior Platform Engineer
Role overview:
As part of Sony Interactive Entertainment's Gaming, Developer & Future Technology Group (GDFT), our Platform Engineering team plays a significant role in delivering a world-class platform experience to millions of players around the globe.
We are looking for a Senior Platform Engineer with a strong focus on observability to join our Berlin team. This is a high-impact, hands-on role at the heart of a strategic company-wide initiative: migrating our observability stack to OpenTelemetry, reducing vendor lock-in across our current tooling and giving us the flexibility to evolve our stack on our own terms.
You will be a key executor of this migration strategy, working with a high degree of autonomy alongside a team based in Berlin, California, and Australia. You are someone who gets things done - comfortable making sound technical decisions and writing code to solve problems when needed.
What You'll Be Doing:
- Play a key hands-on role in the company-wide adoption of OpenTelemetry, implementing and contributing to the reduction of vendor lock-in across our current observability tooling (Datadog, Grafana, and bespoke solutions)
- Design, build, and operate a centralized observability platform covering metrics, logs, traces, alerting, and profiling
- Establish and promote observability best practices and standards across engineering teams
- Develop tooling and automation directly tied to the observability platform
- Treat the observability platform as a product - with internal engineering teams as customers - striving for a great self-service experience, clear documentation, and intuitive interfaces
- Collaborate closely with distributed engineering teams across Berlin, California, and Australia
- Mentor and guide engineers on observability principles and practices
- Contribute to technical design discussions and help shape platform decisions within the team
What We're Looking For:
- 5-6+ years of experience in Platform Engineering, SRE, or DevOps
- Hands-on experience with OpenTelemetry, or strong familiarity with the ecosystem and a genuine eagerness to go deep - instrumentation, collectors, exporters, and pipelines
- Proven experience building and operating observability platforms (metrics, logging, tracing, alerting)
- Development experience in one or more of the following: Go (preferred), Java, Python
- Production experience with Kubernetes and container-based infrastructure
- Experience with cloud platforms, particularly AWS
- Strong Linux and networking fundamentals
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work effectively across distributed, cross-timezone teams
- High degree of autonomy and ownership - you drive things to completion
Nice to Have:
- Active involvement or contributions in the OpenTelemetry open source ecosystem or any other CNCF projects
- Experience with Datadog and/or Grafana and/or Splunk and/or Cribl
- Experience with Helm, ArgoCD, and Argo Rollout
- Infrastructure-as-Code experience (Terraform preferred)
- Experience building Kubernetes operators and extending the Kubernetes platform
