About the Role

YourCode Recruitment is seeking a seasoned Director of Software Engineering to lead strategic technical growth and operational excellence across multiple engineering teams. This role involves leveraging technology to optimise customer-facing systems and drive impactful digital transformation. The successful candidate must combine deep technical expertise (ideally having been a Sr Software Engineer in the past) with a strong business mindset and a passion for building and scaling high-performing teams.

This role will be within an organisation that is scaling, with a chaotic environment (positive chaos) and needing a leader who has seen both chaotic and stable environments in able to lead the successful transformation into a mature working environment.


Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership & Direction

  • Guide the development of scalable and robust system architectures across multiple domains.

  • Oversee high-impact projects aimed at improving data systems, internal tooling, and operational efficiency across product, sales, and logistics functions.

  • Ensure technology solutions are pragmatic, scalable, and user-centric.

Delivering Business Value

  • Oversee day-to-day engineering operations with a focus on process improvement, team productivity, and timely project delivery.

  • Align engineering priorities with broader business goals, managing technical debt and streamlining backlogs.

Team Development & Culture

  • Build, lead, and mentor multiple engineering teams, including coaching of managers and team leads.

  • Foster a culture of continuous learning, transparency, and performance.

  • Design and implement career development frameworks to support team growth.

Strategic Stakeholder Engagement

  • Act as a key liaison between engineering and other business units, ensuring effective cross-functional collaboration.

  • Translate complex business and technical requirements into actionable strategies and solutions.


Qualifications

Leadership Experience

  • Proven track record in a senior engineering leadership position, managing large teams (40+ engineers across 3+ teams).

Experience in building second-layer management and scaling engineering organizations.

Business Acumen

  • Strong strategic thinking and planning capabilities.

  • Ability to align technical initiatives with business objectives and evaluate trade-offs effectively.

  • Background in operations, process optimization, and delivering business-critical projects.

Technical Expertise

Solid experience in software architecture and systems design.
  • Track record of solving complex engineering challenges at scale in a senior or staff engineering capacity.

Soft Skills

  • Strong sense of ownership, initiative, and adaptability in a dynamic environment.

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to convey technical and business concepts clearly.

  • Skilled in managing cross-functional dynamics, risk, and organizational complexity.

This role is ideal for someone looking to make a lasting impact by leading transformative engineering initiatives in a purpose-driven, recession proof organisation. It's crucial that this hire has strong architectural skills as this candidate will be expected to pass a System Design interview with the technology leadership team.
