The Faculty of Physics and Earth System Sciences at Leipzig University seeks to fill the mentioned above professorship from 1 April 2027.
Academic context
Leipzig University and in particular the Faculty for Physics and Earth System sciences have an established profile in "Sustainable Principles for Life and Health" and are also a centre for the interdisciplinary study of the coupled Earth system and its interactions with society. The Institute for Geography at Leipzig University implements an integrative concept in research, teaching and transfer that addresses geographical and spatial science issues with a focus on social and economic transformation as well as geosystem and anthroposphere-related research questions. Research is carried out using the latest methodological developments referring to corresponding spatial and temporal scales. Areas of excellence such as Life:Earth:Humans and Global Dynamics, as well as a diverse and dynamic non-university research landscape in Leipzig, form the scientific environment in which the Institute for Geography acts as a bridge between the Earth system sciences, social sciences and humanities.
Duties
The professorship occupies a central position in research and teaching at the Institute for Geography. With its social geography research profile and in cooperation with the other professorships at the institute and the faculty, it contributes to the establishment of interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research networks. Research activities with strong links to the areas of excellence Life:Earth:Humans and Global Dynamics are expected. The professorship makes substantial contributions to bachelor's and master's degree programmes in which the Institute for Geography is involved. The professorship is also expected to collaborate with other institutes in the Faculty of Physics and Earth System Sciences and beyond. The duties also include participation in academic self-administration.
Requirements
The internationally recognised scientist has outstanding theoretical, methodological and empirical expertise in the field of social geography and has experience e.g. with innovative research designs, mixed-method approaches and cooperative research contexts. Evidence of research activities must be provided, including extensive and successful acquisition of third-party funding and extensive publication activity in internationally recognised journals. Thematic foci could include issues of inequality and socio-spatial justice, particularly in connection with socio-spatially differentiated consequences of selected dimensions of planetary change (e.g. climate- and biodiversity change, resource scarcity, environmental and land use changes). The scientist has a research profile that complements and deepens the existing regional specialisations at the Faculty of Physics and Earth System Sciences and Leipzig University and can be linked to existing research initiatives and collaborations including the ones with partner institutions in the region.
