PhD Position (f/d/m) in Clinical Bioinformatics

About us

The Clinical Bioinformatics group led by Prof. Dr. Cheng-Jian Xu at the Centre for Individualised Infection Medicine (CiiM) and Hannover Medical School (MHH) is seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to join our interdisciplinary research team.

The PhD project will focus on understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying immune aging and disease susceptibility through the integration of large-scale multi-omics, clinical, and population-based data. The successful candidate will contribute to ongoing research on epigenetic regulation of immune function, biological aging, infection susceptibility, and health outcomes.

Using advanced computational, statistical, and artificial intelligence approaches, the candidate will analyze genomic, epigenomic, transcriptomic, and clinical datasets to identify biomarkers and develop predictive models for immune aging, multimorbidity, vaccine responses, and disease risk. The project offers opportunities to work closely with clinicians, epidemiologists, and experimental scientists in an international and collaborative research environment.

Your Responsibilities

  • Analyze and integrate large-scale multi-omics datasets, including genomic, epigenomic, transcriptomic, and clinical data
  • Develop and apply computational, statistical, and machine learning methods for biomarker discovery and risk prediction
  • Investigate molecular mechanisms linking immune aging, inflammation, and disease susceptibility
  • Contribute to the development of predictive models for health outcomes and patient stratification
  • Present research findings at national and international conferences
  • Publish results in high-impact peer-reviewed journals

Your Profile

  • Master's degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, Genomics, Systems Biology, or a related field
  • Strong programming skills in R and/or Python
  • Experience in the analysis of high-throughput omics data is desirable
  • Knowledge of statistics, machine learning, and computational biology
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in an interdisciplinary environment
  • Excellent communication skills in English

We Offer

  • A fully funded 3-year PhD part-time position with 25 hours per week with a planned start date of 1 September 2026
  • A dynamic and international research environment
  • Access to unique multi-omics datasets and state-of-the-art computational infrastructure
  • Close collaboration with leading experts in bioinformatics, immunology, epidemiology, and clinical research
  • Opportunities for scientific training, career development, and international networking
  • An inclusive and supportive working environment at CiiM and Hannover Medical School

The project is embedded within ongoing research on immune aging, epigenomics, and precision medicine, with the goal of translating data-driven discoveries into improved strategies for disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.
