Master Thesis: Development and characterization of ion selective membranes for sensory applications
Benefits: We Have a Lot To Offer
Your Tasks
In a collaborative project between JUMO GmbH and the Erlangen Center for Interface Research and Catalysis (ECRC), research is conducted on ion-selective electrodes (ISEs) with a particular focus on ion-selective membranes. The objective is to design and develop functionalized membranes that exhibit high selectivity for specific ions in aqueous solutions.
For characterization, the membranes are deposited onto precious metal substrates to enable electrochemical measurements and evaluate their sensing performance. In addition, structural and morphological properties are investigated using techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared (IR) spectroscopy, and various microscopy methods. The project involves designing and performing experiments on both model and real systems, as well as analyzing the resulting data and developing robust data analysis workflows.
The candidate will apply theoretical models and scientific knowledge to practical water analysis applications while maintaining close collaboration with research activities at FAU. Overall, the project offers a dynamic research environment that effectively bridges the gap between academic research and industrial application.

Your Profile
• Flexibility, commitment, communication skills, and the ability to work effectively in a team
• Ongoing master's program in chemistry or molecular science
• Practical lab skills in inorganic/material chemistry
• Knowledge about electrochemistry and physical chemistry is welcomed
Additional Information
The practical work will take place at the facility of JUMO in 36039 Fulda. JUMO will pay a monthly expense allowance to cover any travel and accommodation expenses.
The Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg FAU (www.fau.eu) ranks among Germany's leading universities in chemistry research and among the most innovative German universities with an outstanding track record in knowledge transfer (THE Ranking 2023, global number 1 in "industry, innovation, infrastructure"). The Erlangen Center for Interface Research and Catalysis ECRC (www.ecrc.fau.eu) advances cutting-edge research on catalysis and interfaces from basic science to process development. Within this environment, the Libuda Group (www.ecrc.fau.eu/libuda-group) explores complex model interfaces across surface science, electrocatalysis, photochemistry, and in situ/operando methodologies, aiming at mechanistic insight into processes relevant to energy conversion and storage, sustainable chemical production, and advanced materials.
The university promotes gender equality and aims at increasing the fraction of women in science. Handicapped persons are preferred if equally qualified.
Benefits: We Have a Lot To Offer
- Employment in an academic setting with interesting insights into research processes
- Valuable work experience
- Flexible hours
