25.06.2026, Student assistants, internships, student research projects
The Munich Design Institute (MDI) is looking for a student assistant (12 - 20 hrs/week) with a background in design and an interest in design research. The MDI is in an active phase of development - we are looking for someone who wants to contribute to that process and work in a creative, societally relevant research environment. The position has a minimum duration of two semesters.
About Us
The Munich Design Institute (MDI) is an integrative research institute at the Technical University of Munich, where pressing questions of our time are explored through design, science, and design science. We combine rigorous scientific research with creative imagination - and believe that precisely this combination is the key to addressing complex societal challenges.
The institute is led by Prof. Annette Diefenthaler, who holds the Chair of Design and Transdisciplinarity and brings 20 years of international experience in design and design research in practice.
The MDI connects researchers from design, engineering, and the social sciences with partners from industry, civil society, and politics - developing formats, methods, and projects that enable the creation of future-ready solutions.
Your Responsibilities
• Co-designing and curating the MDI Space in Garching - as a place for research, exchange, and creative work
• Supporting the institute's communication activities (website, social media, visual materials)
• Helping to prepare and run workshops, events, and institute formats
• Supporting ongoing research projects through design practice (visualization, prototyping, documentation)
• General support in building the institute - getting things done, thinking ahead, shaping what's next
What You Bring
• Enrolment at a German university
• Design education or related training (e.g. industrial design, communication design, interior design, architecture, media design) - or demonstrable design practice
• Interest in Research through Design and transdisciplinary questions
• Motivation to actively contribute to a growing institute and take on responsibility
• Independent, reliable working style and enjoyment of collaborative work
• Good command of German and English
What We Offer
• Insight into current design research and a transdisciplinary research environment
• The opportunity to help shape a new institute from its early stages
• Flexible working hours and hybrid working
• A motivated team and an inspiring work atmosphere
Remuneration according to TUM's standard rates for student assistants
