At the Chair of Pharmaceutical Biology, we develop new therapeutic avenues and biomaterials that use principles found in nature to better treat bacterial infections. We are studying the communication between bacteria and cells to identify new therapeutic approaches for inflammatory diseases.

Our research group currently consists of four doctoral and one postdoctoral researcher, two scientists, three technical staff, and a chair office ( www.pharmbio.nat.fau.de ). We are part of the Department Biology, a lively academic environment covering various aspects of modern biological research.

We offer an attractive and multidisciplinary workplace in a working group in the area of innovative pharmaceutical-biological research. Our laboratories have only just been extensively renovated, and provide a very modern experimental infrastructure with state-of-the-art research equipment.

Your Tasks

We are looking for a responsible, highly self-motivated and structured candidate to work on a new ERC Proof-of-concept project ( https://www.fau.eu/2026/07/news/research/three-erc-proof-of-concept-grants-for-fau/ ). The aim of this project is to explore the scientific and commercial value of a biomimetic nanocarrier as therapeutic avenue against bacterial infections.

For this PoC project, the candidate should embark on the following two tasks:

  1. Full responsibility for experimental work in the further development of our biomimetics, as well as their scalable production and characterisation using infection models
  2. Completing additional training courses through the FAU Start-up Programme, and establishing commercial and scientific contacts with interested partners

Your Profile

Required qualifications

We are looking for a talented and self-motivated candidate with a PhD in the field of Pharmacy, Nanotechnology or Biotechnology from a nationally or internationally known institution.

Independent work and a proactive attitude towards new projects are essential requirements for this position. The candidate will be expected to assist in the supervision of Master's students.

Fluent written and oral communication in English (level C1 or higher) is essential, a very good command of German is required to complete the start-up training courses. Good knowledge of MS Office (Power Point, Excel, Word) and Corel software, as well as knowledge of literature review and data processing software (e.g. Endnote/Citavi, SigmaPlot) is essential.

Proven experience in the following areas is an advantage

Knowledge of business matters, as well as previous experience with IP issues, is a major advantage

Additional knowledge of extracellular vesicles, infection therapies, biomaterials or immunological expertise is considered desirable.

Remuneration: A13 (100%); Working hours 40 h/week
